The course is for experienced GRASS and GIS users from universities, public administrations and enterprises and provides a deeper knowledge of 2D hydrological analysis with GRASS GIS. In addition to the GRASS 6.4 version, improvements of the hydrological modules in GRASS 7 are discussed, too. Instructor is Sören Gebbert. He has been active for many years in the GRASS GIS project, developed numerous GRASS modules, particularly for the analysis of hydro(geo)logical tasks and has several years experiences with training and workshops on GRASS (see menu references).

Topics of the 2-day training

• Interpolation methods to optimize the amount of models and interpolation of rainfall measurements
• Determination of surface parameters (ridges, plains, valleys, ...)
• Calculation of slopes, surface drainage, drains, water accumulation during heavy rain events
• Calculating the potential evapotranspiration by different methods (Haude, Thornthwaite)
• Calculation of groundwater recharge
• Evaluation of land use based on satellite images
• Calculation of catchment areas receiving water / drainage systems and drainage directions
• Calculation of the catchment area of a measured level and the amount of runoff
• Calculation of a reservoir and its catchment area

Exercise material

For this training will be provided extensive training data and the data matched exercise script.

Required skills

Knowledge of GRASS GIS. Optimally, the visit of the GRASS (I) Introduction.

Costs

€ 850 + VAT - This includes all course materials, beverages and snacks, and lunch. Students, apprentices and unemployed people can participate at reduced rates, if the course is not fully booked.
