More and more institutions, universities and companies are interested in Free Geographic Information Systems, such as GRASS and Quantum GIS and would like to use them for their projects. This trend is reflected, not only in the two currently conducted training courses at the Institute of Landscape Ecology and Botany, University of Greifswald and at the Institute of Rural Studies of the Agricultural Research Centre in Braunschweig.

In both courses, the entire spectrum of the functionalities was addressed and then adapted according to the special interest (eg image processing and working with external spatial databases) of the participants.
